Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts & culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.
This year, we’re highlighting the deeply moving documentary Mediha and the ever so magical Disney’s Encanto. Both stories offer a unique perspective of personal healing in the face of displacement and loss. They remind us of the powerful experience when stories are heard, and when communities come together. We hope the screenings are an informative way to inspire dialogue, deepen empathy, and stand in solidarity with those seeking safety and belonging.
A powerful testament to the human spirit, Mediha, a teenage Yazidi girl films herself bravely facing her past through her fight for justice after surviving ISIS captivity. Whilst rescuers search for her missing family members, she first takes care of her younger brothers in uncertainty. Her video diaries are an incredibly personal way to process her trauma, revealing the strength and determination of a young survivor.
Content guidance: Sexual violence references, strong threat, themes of abuse and trauma

“Offers what few documentaries covering this region’s conflicts do… By entrusting Mediha with the camera, Oswald has given her and her brothers an opportunity to exercise hope, offering audiences a sacred invitation”
