Jane Austen’s works and characters have, permeated the culture to such an extent that even those who haven’t engaged it with directly are, nonetheless, familiar with Elizabeth and Darcy, or Emma, or Elinor and Marianne. They understand what Austen is. Or, at least, they think they do. For she is also one of the most misunderstood of our classic writers.
There is no romantic comedy as we know it without Austen. But we would also lack some of the sharpest, funniest insights into what it means to be human. In Jane Austen on Screen, we look at how TV and film have celebrated, granted longevity to and, occasionally, misread this incredible body of work.
