Though horror movies coming out of Britain and Europe carry a more traditional kind of Gothic quality, the US movement takes inspiration from very different home-grown authors like Edgar Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. This American Gothic runs through the veins of a host of stateside cinematic horrors, spreading its evil from the Louisiana bayous to rural towns and abandoned housing projects. This course will examine the links between gothic horror and geographical locales in the land of Uncle Sam, looking at Universal horrors, 80s slashers and more off-kilter chillers.
