Broadway seeks new Chair
Broadway is recruiting for a new Chair to steer the charity’s governance through another exciting and challenging period in our illustrious 28-year history.
With the imminent launch of a new website, capital improvements and a brand refresh scheduled for 2019, this role is pivotal to ensuring Broadway’s success and continued development.
About Broadway
Broadway is one of the UK’s leading 4 screen independent cinemas, presenting a range of educational, talent development and community-based film and arts activities that aim to inspire creativity and a lifelong love of film. Broadway is a National Portfolio Organisation receiving support from the Arts Council England, for our Near Now studio for art, design and innovation and is the film hub lead organisation for Film Hub Midlands (in a strategic partnership with Birmingham-based Flatpack), part of the British Film Institute’s UK wide Film Audience Network aimed at ensuring the greatest choice of film is available for everyone.
Nottingham Media Centre Ltd, trading as Broadway, is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. Its board members are both directors of the company and trustees of the charity. The role of the board is to act collectively to fulfil its legal and governance responsibilities for the organisation. The board oversees the implementation of Broadway’s strategic direction and acts to protect its charitable objects and values. The management of Broadway is delegated by the board to the Chief Executive, who leads the professional staff team. Established in 1990, Broadway is customer focussed, having a turnover of more than £3m with a subsidiary company that operates our popular bar and catering business.
The duties associated with this voluntary position include:
- chairing quarterly board meetings, maintaining impartiality and objectivity to the decision-making process
- liaison and support for Broadway’s chief executive and senior staff team
- establishing and build an effective and constructive working relationship with the Chief Executive, ensuring they are held to account for achieving agreed strategic objectives
- creating the environment for a high performing board team and encourage productive relationships with and among individual board members.
- focussing on the long-term strategy for the organisation
- setting the long-term governance plan ensuring the organisation meets all its legal and charitable responsibilities
- leading the ongoing development and contribution of the board, currently consisting of 8 Trustee/Directors
- representing Broadway locally and nationally at external meetings and events
Who we’re looking for - someone who:
- has experience of networking with social, economic and political influencers, locally and nationally
- loves film and is passionate about inspiring creativity
- understands the challenges of achieving sustainable development faced by the sector and the need for innovative and pro-active leadership at board level
- has a track record of success within the cinema, arts or charity sector at board or senior management level
- has the leadership and presence to motivate the board into using their expertise, knowledge and contacts to support the development of Broadway’s strategic objectives
- maintains a high level of business acumen and understands the importance of providing excellent customer experience
- will support Broadway’s strategic direction and the importance of the board in successfully achieving business objectives
- works closely with the Chief Executive to ensure that meetings are well planned, meaningful and reflect the responsibilities of trustees
- can commit to time outside of quarterly board meetings for face-to-face meetings with the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team
