Directed by Sean Baker (Anora, The Florida Project, Tangerine) and Shih-Ching Tsou, 2004's Take Out follows Ming Ding, an undocumented Chinese immigrant living in a post-9/11 New York City. He is given until the end of the day to muster up a large sum to pay off the loan sharks to whom he owes money. His only recourse is to repay his debts using the tips he receives from a single day’s work as a delivery man.
The second screening by new film collective Club Jok explores the day-to-day precariousness of an immigrant living in America under the Bush administration. Baker and Tsou’s neorealist approach to portraying the immigrant experience and the ultimate lie of the American Dream perfectly complements Club Jok’s aim to shed light on the stories that often go untold in mainstream cinema.
Preceded by a special pre-recorded introduction with director Sean Baker, hosted by film collective Club Jok.
