As Downton Abbey comes to a glorious and opulent end, join us for a celebration of the English country house drama. Upstairs, downstairs, the gardens, the dining rooms and (feigns shock) the bedrooms; all have played host on the cinema screen to an amazing range of characters, stories, romances, tragedies and history. From Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters, to Forster’s novels of the early 1900s; from Merchant Ivory to Julian Fellowes; all have allowed us to sip Martinis and eat canapés with the upper echelons of society. But why are we so fascinated with these stories? What draws us back to these rooms and corridors time and time again? Who is it we want to be in these stories? Join us as we check your coats and announce you at the door one more time…
