Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes were married from 1954 until his death in 1989. They were close collaborators and worked on ten films together (eight of which were directed by Cassavetes). A Woman Under the Influence is often referred to as his best film and thought of as the quintessential Cassavetes-Rowlands picture.

Rowlands stars as housewife and mother Mabel Longhetti, whose erratic behaviour starts having an impact on her family, particularly her relationship with her husband Nick (played by Peter Falk), an LA construction worker. Despite not receiving proper distribution on its original release, the film was still nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Actress for Gena Rowlands and Best Director for John Cassavetes.
