The modern heist movie was invented in Paris in 1954 by Jules Dassin in RIFIFI. Dassin built his film around a 28-minute safe-cracking sequence that is the father of all later movies in which thieves carry out complicated robberies... Echoes can be found from Kubrick's THE KILLING to Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS.

Ashwin Balu will introduce this screening.
Ashwin Balu is a 28-year-old journalist and music producer based in Nottingham. An avid researcher of the darker side of 60s and 70s film scores and library music, he spends hours online delving into the works of the greats, studying their ability to create mood and atmosphere to pair with the cinematography of that era. Born in Singapore, his intrigue into the world of cinema started at a young age as his father worked as a cameraman and soundman for TV and film in Asia. Fascinated with the latter of the two disciplines, Ashwin gravitated towards music production over the last few years and is currently a part of the Sirkus Studios collective in the city centre. He recently co-wrote his first film score for the documentary THE MOVEMENT by Sharon Walia. His other past times include cooking unjustifiably spicy food and fawning over obsolete analog musical equipment.
