The Godfather returns to screens this month, with a stunning new 4K restoration, to mark the 50th anniversary of its original release in 1972.
A milestone in American cinema and one of the biggest box office smashes of the New Hollywood movement, the success of The Godfather acted as the catalyst for the careers of both director Francis Ford Coppola and star Al Pacino. It also revitalised Marlon Brando’s career, which had been on the decline since the ‘60s.
Based on the novel of the same name by Mario Puzo, the film chronicles the journey of Michael Corleone, from reluctant family outsider to ruthless mafia boss, after his father Vito Corleone hands over the family empire.
