Newly-refurbished Screen 1 now open

Broadway Cinema’s newly-refurbished Screen 1 is now open following a month of improvement works in the venue’s largest screen that includes comfort upgrades with new wider seats, increased aisle widths, and the addition of all-important cupholders.

The renovation of the 248-capacity Screen 1 also includes the installation of state-of-the-art 4K projection and an upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1 surround sound, quadrupling the sound capacity in Broadway’s classic screen.

The completion of refurbishment in Broadway’s largest screen marks the end of the first stage of a three-month improvement project at the Hockley-based independent cinema - which will also include seating and audio/visual upgrades in Screens 2 and 4 - due for completion by the end of August.

To open the screen in style, the premiere film will be a special 20th anniversary 4K restoration of sci-fi classic The Matrix on Friday 12 July. The perfect film to test out the new equipment on.

Broadway CEO Steve Mapp said: “After months of planning and building work we’re proud to reopen the doors to Screen 1. These improvements have future-proofed our largest and oldest screen and the upgrades to seating, sound and projection will dazzle old and new customers alike. This work confirms Broadway’s place as one of the premiere independent cinema venues in the UK.”

There will be plenty of opportunities to experience the new upgrades in the coming weeks with 4K screenings of moon landing documentary Apollo 11 and Stanley Kubrick’s dazzling space epic 2001: A Space Odyssey.
