Made at Broadway film PAA JOE & THE LION is heading to SXSW

Broadway-based filmmaker Ben Wigley is heading to the prestigious SXSW (South by Southwest) film and music festival with his film Paa Joe & the Lion.

Paa Joe & the Lion will have its North American premiere in Austin, TX in March, alongside an impressive line-up of documentaries, fiction features and gala events, including Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, Michael Winterbottom’s On the Road and Terrence Malick’s Song to Song.

Paa Joe & The Lion tells the story of Paa Joe, also known as the Grandfather of Ghana’s fantasy coffin trade – an artist and pioneer of the fantasy coffin who, although celebrated the world over, is struggling to survive back in Ghana. Broadway-based filmmaker, Benjamin Wigley, embarked on a five-year journey across Ghana and the UK to uncover the story of this extraordinary craftsman.

Developed through Documentary Campus Masterschool with the support of Worldview, and made with the support of Creative England and Kickstarter, Paa Joe & The Lion premiered at Sheffield Doc/Fest in June, before returning to Broadway last August for a gala screening preceded by a procession and followed by a Q&A with director Ben Wigley, Paa Joe himself and his son Jacob.

SXSW takes place in Austin, TX on 10-19 March 2017. To find out more information about Paa Joe & the Lion, please visit To follow the team’s adventures, join them on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.
