What is BFI Film Academy Short Course delivered by Broadway?
Broadway has delivered a BFI Film Academy Short Course Programme for the past eleven years'. During this time, we’ve supported and nurtured 212 talented young people, from all backgrounds, to take their first step towards a career in the film industry through this prestigious programme.
Course participants develop their knowledge and practical skills through training led by award-winning professionals and by getting hands-on experience across all roles in the screen industry. After developing their knowledge and practical skills, course participants team up to make short films which will then be premiered at an exclusive gala screening with a public Q&A here at Broadway - in our biggest cinema screen.
During their time on the course, participants will also work towards completing the specially created NCFE Level 2 Award In Preparing To Work In The Film Industry qualification for the national Short Course programme.

Past participants of Broadway’s BFI Film Academy Short Course have gone on to paid traineeships on major international feature film & TV Pinewood studio productions, including:
- Lucas Film and Disney+'s Solo: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Willow, Andor and Cruella
- Warner Brothers' Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
- EON Production's Bond: No Time To Die
- Netflix's Matilda The Musical
Past participants have also been exclusively recruited and been crucial crew members on local and national TV productions such as:
- ITV's Without Sin
- BBC's The Gallows Pole and soon to be released Boiling Point
- Channel 4's 24 Hours in A&E based in Nottingham
- Netflix's Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story
- Sky's Brassic
Twenty committed and creative applicants will take part in the upcoming BFI Film Academy 2023-24 Short Course programme delivered by Broadway in Autumn 2023. Please note, applications for this year's programme have now closed.
The course offers an inclusive and supportive experience through a 4-week process of practical and theory-based filmmaking masterclasses, delivered by esteemed screen industry professionals who are working full-time in Film & TV.
Participants will receive first-hand accounts of not only what their jobs involve, but also the journeys they took to get there and how participants can forge their own path into the Film and TV industry. Once participants have completed the course, they will become part of the ever-growing alumni network of both Broadway’s wider network and BFI Film Academy alumni across the UK - and will be presented with exclusive access to events and opportunities such as:
- Career talks and mentoring, training masterclasses and bootcamps
- Paid traineeship placements at film and high-end TV productions
- Residential programmes with BFI Film Academy Specialist Courses based all around the UK
- In addition, recommendations provided by BFI Film Academy Short Course delivered by Broadway Lead for local and national arts and cultural organisations, and Film & TV productions who are seeking new and creative emerging filmmaking talent to join their teams!
WHEN WILL IT TAKE PLACE?
The BFI Film Academy Short Course delivered by Broadway programme takes place out of education hours, and this year will be held over the October 2023 half-term with weekend sessions either side.

HOW DO I APPLY?
Applications for BFI Film Academy Short Course delivered by Broadway 2023-24 are now closed.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
It costs £25 to be a participant on the course - but please don't be put off if you think you might not be able to pay this cost.
We offer an array of bursaries to participants who wouldn't be able to attend the upcoming Short Course programme otherwise. If you have the passion and talent, we'll make sure you can attend.
Information regarding available bursaries will be sent to successful shortlisted applicants once accepted onto the programme.
AM I ELIGIBLE?
Interested young people must meet the BFI's set criteria below:
- Be aged 16 to 19-years-old on the first day of the course
- Be a UK resident
- Have a passion or talent for filmmaking and an ambition to work in the film industry
- Be able to commit to the duration of the course
- Not currently be at university or enrolled at university when the course starts
- Not have previously enrolled on a BFI Film Academy course (Short or Specialist)
