The Descendants 15
Wed 22 Feb - Thu 1 Mar - Book Now
Director: Alexander Payne
Cast: George Clooney, Judy Greer, Beau Bridges
Origin: United States
Duration: 114m
In his first film since the Oscar-winning SIDEWAYS, writer-director Alexander Payne again proves himself a master of the kind of smart, sharp and surprisingly tender comedy that was once the signature of Billy Wilder and Jean Renoir. He follows Matt King, the heir of a prominent Hawaiian landowning family whose life is thrown for a loop when his wife is critically injured in a boating accident. Rooted in Clooney’s beautifully understated performance, Payne’s film is an uncommonly perceptive portrait of marriage, family and community, suffused with humour and tragedy, and wrapped in a warm human glow. I wanted to like this one but it was a real chore to sit through. For me, this wasn't a realistic take on family life, Clooney being surrounded by too many cardboard cliche characters for the film to be really engaging. Not a great deal happened in a very long time and judging by the speed with which most of the audience grabbed their coats and hitailed it out of there as soon as the first credits appeared, I wasn't the only one with a similar opinion. Not for me.

Good film, well made.

Clooney (and the young supporting cast) are excellent in this subtle, emotional and fantastic drama from the director of Sideways. It has a lot more heart and is a lot less barbed than his previous work and Clooney hasn't been this good since Good Night and Good Luck. Go see!

A touching, funny but ultimately sad film. Clooney is excellent throughout. I will never picture Hawaii the same again.
