Great Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith reunite for this comedy-drama based on Deborah Moggach’s novel about a group of pensioners who head for India with dreams of a life of luxury and wind up at the titular hotel. With the emphasis more on ‘faded’ than ‘grandeur’, they find themselves at the mercy of the entrepreneurial Sonny (Dev Patel), who attempts to convince them they are in fact in a retirement paradise, a veritable home from home. Well written, very well acted, great idea with dry mumour that keeps the drama in check. Brilliant contrast between Asian and Western lives and values -family connections Vs a variety of Western family dysfunctions. This film would be enjoyable for all those who enjoy the human story but those who think they'll live forever probably won't get it.
Wonderful! A really good all round film with a fabulous cast. Looks at many taboo subjects with humour and wit. The scenes are fabulous and take us on the rollercoaster trip of travel in India. A must see for all from age 12 to 112!
Charming and poignant vignette on middle aged life transposed to a dilapidated Mumbai hotel. I bet you a lamb passanda you'll cry at least once. I did!
