One of those out-of-the-blue delights that cinema can sometimes spring on audiences, The Artist is a highly original and hilariously funny story about ambition and passion set in 1920s’ Hollywood. George Valentin is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller, it seems the sky’s the limit – major movie stardom awaits. A glorious cinematic surprise, featuring a stunning recreation of the silent era and superb performances from all. Leeds International Film Festival

I was quite taken aback at how quickly I adjusted to it being a silent film and after a while it just seemed 'normal'. There is one part of the film where sound comes back in for a short while and I actually found it quite annoying and was releived when it became silent again.
It was beautifully shot, one scene that really stood out was a meeting between the two protaganists on a flight of stairs whilst people walked past them up and down the stairs.
Also, in much the same way as a lot of the acting is 'hammed up' to make up for the lack of words so too were a lot of the 'vsual clues' going on in the various scenes. Something that I thought worked really well.
Id love to see it again as I'm sure I missed loads of them.............
Only citicism - I wish it had been shot on film as it looked a bit too 'clean'.
Go see!

A good film and sweet look back to the 1920s. But the story is not very deep, not very special. Sure, the actors are very good and the dog is very cute, but the big surprise is missing. It is a bit too long - but has great sonic moments.

An absolute charmer of a film from start to finish - and surely in those many award nominations, a best supporting actor for the dog?

Thoroughly entertaining and delightful. The Artist is full of charm, wit, inventiveness and the leads are fabulous. Can't wait to see them all on screen again soon - especially Uggie the dog!
