Dark Origins: The History of Fairy Tales in Film UC

Why does our fascination with fairy tales continue to thrive through the medium of cinema? Can fairy tale cinema hold up a magic mirror to reflect our changing society? We will explore these questions andmore by looking at classic motifs and archetypes in a range of films. From the sublime animations of Lotte Reiniger, via the syrupy success of Disney, to the dark re-imaginings of Guillermo del Toro, we will discover how fairy tale films conitnue to tap into our basic fears, hopes and secret desires. No prior knowledge is needed for this course.
